C.W. Post director of athletics, Bryan Collins, recently announced that Meghan McNamara, an assistant coach with the Pioneers women's lacrosse team for the last two seasons, has been named as the program's head coach.
McNamara, who has been a part of five national championship teams as both a coach and player in college lacrosse, becomes the second head coach in the team's eight-plus year history, and takes over for Karen MacCrate Henning, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Colby (Maine).
"I am very excited that Meghan McNamara has accepted our head women's lacrosse coach position," remarked Collins. "She has been a winner at every level of the game, and helped our team achieve success as an assistant coach here for the last two years. Meghan's ability to relate to the players, as well as her strong knowledge of the game, will ensure that our women's lacrosse team continues its national prominence."
"I am looking forward to continuing the great tradition of C.W. Post, and to continue to work with this talented group of players," commented McNamara. "I have some big shoes to fill, but am very excited and optimistic about this opportunity."
A native of East Northport, N.Y., McNamara was an assistant coach at C.W. Post for the last two seasons (2006-07), where she helped the Pioneers to a 33-2 record. Her coaching helped the team to a perfect 17-0 record in 2007, giving C.W. Post the program's second NCAA Division II national championship.
Prior to coming to C.W. Post, McNamara spent four seasons as assistant coach at nearby Stony Brook University. She was actively involved in recruiting for the Seawolves program, and was instrumental in developing individual workouts and offensive game strategies. McNamara was the assistant director of Stony Brook Lacrosse Camps and Clinics during her stay at the school, and spent the final four months of the 2005 calendar year at the program's interim head coach.
McNamara is a 2001 graduate of the University of Maryland, where she helped the Terrapins to a combined record of 83-4 and four national championships during her playing career. A member of the 2001 ACC All-Tournament Team, she registered 71 points (51 g, 20 a) in a Maryland uniform. McNamara has served as a coach for the University of Maryland lacrosse camp for nearly nine years, and worked at STX lacrosse camp from 2002-04.
