Ian Smart put together a remarkable career for the Pioneer football team, suiting up from 1999-2002.
Smart had an outstanding career at C.W. Post, amassing a remarkable 6,647 yards rushing in 45 games. He registered two games of 300+ yards rushing and 6 touchdowns, and ended his career in green and gold as the school’s all-time leading rusher with 95 touchdowns.
His senior season, he set school records with 2,536 yards rushing and 33 touchdowns.
Smart also broke several national records as his 94 rushing touchdowns and 570 career points set new NCAA records.
After graduation, Smart signed with the New York Jets, and was allocated to NFL Europe, where he played for the Scottish Claymores in 2004.
After the 2004 season, he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and was active for six games. His first NFL carry against the Atlanta Falcons went for 25 yards and helped the Bucs to a 27-0 win.
Smart signed with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League in 2006, and helped the team to a 2006 Grey Cup, scoring the only touchdown of the game. In 2007, he was named the CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player of the Year and was a Western and CFL All-Star. In 2008, Smart repeated his performance as a CFL Western All-Star, setting the league’s single season record for kick return carries and yards.
