Kaftan was the driving force behind bringing the newly-formed C.W. Post men’s basketball program to a competitive level while achieving national prominence and establishing a winning tradition. 

Named head coach of the Pioneers in 1958, Kaftan went on to post a 195-123 record in 15 seasons, including two NCAA tournament appearances and one NCAA Regional Final. 

Prior to coaching, Kaftan was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1949 and played five years with the Celtics, New York Knickerbockers, and the Baltimore Bullets. 

Kaftan played college basketball at the College of the Holy Cross from 1946-48 and twice gained All-America notice as well as being named the 1947 NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player. 
Kaftan, a retired dentist, biology teacher, and basketball coach, resides in Manasquan, N.J., with his wife, Helen.
