Football
Ed Powers was a standout quarterback for the Pioneers. In 1972, listed as the third-string quarterback, he was given a starting opportunity and made the most of it as the Pioneers would never lose a game that Powers started and finished during his tenure as the starting quarterback. Powers was also an excellent contributor on the basketball court.
Powers led the Pioneers to a 10-1 record, a MAC Championship and a Lambert Cup in 1973. He earned Little All-American notice, along with ECAC Player of the Year, Metropolitan Football Most Valuable Player, and NY Times Sports Writers All-East Team honors. He also finished second in the nation statistically in total offense, behind future NFL standout, Jim Zorn, and third in the nation in passing.
After suffering a knee injury in 1974 while playing for the Pioneers football team, he rehabilitated and came back to earn the Thomas O’Connell Award for Comeback Player of the Year.
