Swimming Splits With Towson, Howard In Season Opener

TOWSON, Md. (Oct. 4, 2008) – The C.W. Post swimming team opened the 2008 season and earned a split against Towson University and Howard University Saturday afternoon at Burdick Pool. The Pioneers lost to Towson, 148-104, before defeating Howard, 159-64.
In all, the Pioneers posted six first-place victories in the meet.
Senior
Katie Kelly (Sayville, N.Y.) posted three victories, first with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a final time of one minute, 08.76 seconds. Kelly also captured a win in the 200 breast (2:28.63) before teaming up with senior
Stephanie Palmeri (Seaford, N.Y.), junior
Josephine Tjernstrom (Bromma, Sweden) and freshman
Amanda Preston (Newport, R.I.) in the 400 free relay to finish at 4:00.06, ahead of second-place Howard by more than eight seconds.
Palmeri helped her cause with a first-place finish in the 500 free, clocking in at 5:31.53.
Senior
Mariel Andersson (Brastad, Sweden) finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a final time of one minute, .09 seconds.
Sophomore
Riley Cassidy (Cambridge, Ontario) also captured a win in the 100 fly, checking in at 1:01.20.
Also capturing highlighting performances for the Pioneers were sophomore
Sofi Mathsson (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior
Dora Biocic (Zagreb, Croatia), who finished second and third, respectively in the 200 individual medley. Meanwhile, junior
Brittany Roman-Green (Woodstock, N.Y.) also had a second-place finish in the 200 back with a final time of 2:13.61.
C.W. Post will return to action Nov. 5 when it hosts Queens College (N.Y.) at the Pratt Recreation Center at 5 p.m.
