Offense Lifts Baseball Over New Haven, 5-2

Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) pitched eight innings to earn his sixth win of the season as C.W. Post defeated the University of New Haven, 5-2, in an East Coast Conference baseball game Friday afternoon.
C.W. Post is the winner of three straight and improves its overall record to 23-20 and 14-7 in the conference. New Haven has lost its last four and falls to 17-21 overall and 12-9 in the conference.
The Pioneers led off with four runs in the bottom of the first inning that began with a home run shot to left field from senior designated hitter
Mike Sylvester (Farmingdale, N.Y.). Sophomore centerfielder
Mike Callaghan singled to left field to drive in junior second baseman
Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.), who earlier had doubled to right field. Senior leftfielder
Brian Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error by the first baseman that allowed Callaghan to score. The final run of the inning was scored on a single to centerfield from senior third baseman
Steve Algarroba (Astoria, N.Y.), scoring junior rightfielder
Bruce Testa (Glen Cove, N.Y.).
New Haven cut the lead in half with single runs in the second and third innings off Kay. In the third inning, senior catcher Michael Moras doubled to centerfield to score junior second baseman Evan Okon from first. The Chargers attempted to add another run later in the inning when Moras advanced to third and attempted to score on a base hit from leftfielder Kyle Donnelly but was thrown out at the plate by Testa to end the inning.
The Pioneers added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore shortstop
Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) scored from third base after junior catcher
Brian Anderson (Nesconset, N.Y.) reached first base on an infield error.
Testa and Bonin each batted 2 for 4 with a run scored for the Pioneers. Moras batted 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Chargers.
Kay pitched eight complete innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits while striking out eight and walking five batters.
Sophomore T.J. Phelan pitched six innings for the loss, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits.
C.W. Post will continue the series with New Haven with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 26 at 12 p.m.
