Sylvester Leads Baseball Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-3

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2008) – C.W. Post scored four runs in the sixth inning to overcome St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-3, in a Tuesday afternoon baseball game
The Pioneers have now won three straight games and improve to 13-15 overall while the Spartans slip to 14-14 overall.
The Spartans claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore designated hitter Kevin Connors hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score sophomore first baseman Vincent Malzahn, who started off the inning with a triple. The home team tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth when Connors scored on a wild pitch from starter

The Pioneers' bats awoke in the sixth as they put together a four-run inning on five hits. Senior left fielder
Brian Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) scored from third on a base hit from senior third baseman
Steve Algarroba (Astoria, N.Y.). Later in the inning, senior designated hitter
Mike Sylvester (Farmingdale, N.Y.) drove in two with a double. Sylvester came around to score on a passed ball for the inning's fourth run.
C.W. Post increased its lead in the top of the seventh when junior first baseman
Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) hit his first career home run off freshman pitcher Kevin Ryan.
In the top of the ninth, the Pioneers scored two more runs to put the game out of reach for the Spartans. Junior right fielder
#P.J. Ragone# (Deer Park, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to socre Montesano from second while junior second baseman
Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) hit a double later in the inning to score Ragone from second.
Sylvester went 4-for-6 at the plate with two runs driven in. Montesano batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI for the Pioneers.
Kay pitched eight innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out six with two walks.
Spartan starter Anthony Russo took the loss, pitching five and a third and allowing four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and four bases on balls.
The Pioneers will play at Queens College on Apr. 9 at 3 p.m. before hosting Bryant University on Apr. 11 at 2 p.m.
