No. 3 Adelphi Edges Out No. 1 Women's Lacrosse; Panthers Claim ECC Title

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 2, 2008) – Freshman attacker Michelle Ceraso tallied three goals to lift Adelphi University over top-ranked C.W. Post, 7-4, in a Friday afternoon East Coast Conference women's lacrosse tilt. With the win, the Panthers claim their first ECC crown in program history.
Adelphi remains undefeated with the win and improves to 16-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play. The loss ends a 32-game win streak for the Pioneers as they lose their first game since the NCAA semifinals when they were defeated by Adelphi by a 9-8 score.
The Panthers played a relentless first half and outshot the Pioneers by a 15-9 margin. Ceraso scored the game's first goal with 19 minutes on the clock. Junior attacker Rachel Ray added to Adelphi's column with a goal at 9:28. Freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Carter scored the third goal of the game with an unassisted goal at 5:06. The Panthers scored their fourth goal of the half when sophomore midfielder Vanessa Sotcheff scored on a pass from Ray. The Panthers led 4-0 at the half.
Adelphi controlled much of the second half, keeping the Pioneers from positioning themselves in front of the goal. In addition, the Panthers scored three goals – including two back-to-back goals from Ceraso – to give themselves a 7-0 cushion.
The Pioneers responded with their first goal at 7:20 when junior attacker
Katie Hogan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) flicked in a shot on a pass from senior midfielder
Elaine Williams (East Islip, N.Y.). Williams added two goals of her won at 3:28 and 3:08 on assists from Hogan. Sophomore attacker
Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) scored the game's final with 31 seconds remaining.
Adelphi completed the game outshooting C.W. Post, 23-19, and held a 17-10 ground ball advantage while causing four turnovers.
Sophomore Caitlin Fitzpatrick made seven saves in goal to preserve the win for the Panthers.
C.W. Post will wrap up its regular season against Philadelphia University at 1 p.m. and will honor its graduating senior class. Adelphi completes its regular season and now awaits a berth in the upcoming NCAA championship tournament in Houston, Texas.
