Volleyball Captures Conference Opener At Mercy, 3-1

Laura Maehlmann (Gunderfingen, Germany) recorded a season-high 17 kills as C.W. Post opened East Coast Conference play with a 3-1 win over Mercy College Thursday evening. The set scores were 25-13, 23-25, 25-9 and 25-17.
C.W. Post improves to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the ECC while Mercy drops to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the ECC.
The Pioneers cruised through the first set by a 25-13 score as the Pioneers tallied 13 kills and took advantage of Mercy's 10 unforced errors. Senior setter
Lucia Krskova (Prievidza, Slovakia) made eight assists.
Mercy held off the Pioneers in the second set to tie the match up. Senior setter Trevene Smith recorded a game-high 12 assists in the set as the Mavericks outhit the Pioneers by a 47-35 margin.
In the third set, the Pioneers jumped out to a 9-2 lead and held Mercy to just seven additional points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
C.W. Post recorded 14 kills in the fourth set to hold off the Mavericks and win the match.
Junior outside hitter
Sammy Figliolia (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs while Krskova finished the match with 21 assists and 12 digs.
C.W. Post will next play at the Lock Haven Invitational this weekend and will match up against Ohio Valley University, Shippensburg, Wilmington (Del.) and host Lock Haven.
