Volleyball Rallies Past Mercy, 3-2

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2009) – Four players registered double-doubles as C.W. Post defeated Mercy College, 3-2, in East Coast Conference volleyball action Thursday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center. The match scores were 25-21, 25-8, 25-27, 17-25 and 15-12.
C.W. Post improves to 9-8 overall and 5-1 in ECC action while Mercy slips to 2-16 overall and 0-5 in the ECC.
Junior outside hitter Lauren Brown (Mount Gilead, N.C.) tallied 13 kills with 10 digs and five aces. Freshman middle hitter Kirsten Taylor (South Pasadena, Calif.) led the Pioneers with 17 kills and 13 digs and added four service aces and three blocks. Junior outside hitter Marilena Guadagnini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) added 11 kills and 12 digs and freshman outside hitter Geony Fisher (Goodyear, Ariz.) registered 10 kills and 15 digs.
Junior setter Amanda Ostapow (East Setauket, N.Y.), who received the Fighting Spirit award following the match by head coach Shellane Ogoshi, tallied 54 assists for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers fended off the Mavericks through the first two sets before Mercy fought back to take the next two sets.
In the fifth set, Guadagnini turned up the heat with six kills as the Pioneers recorded the final three points to finish off the Mavericks for the night.
Junior middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) led the Mavericks with a match-high 19 kills and tallied 13 digs. Freshman setter Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y.) added 34 assists and seven digs.
C.W. Post returns to action Oct. 10 at Franklin Pierce. The Pioneers resume conference play at the University of Bridgeport no Oct. 13.
