Men's Basketball Handles Mercy, 83-54

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 5, 2009) – Four starters scored in double figures to pace the C.W. Post men's basketball team as it pushed to its first victory of the season in the home opener, defeating Mercy College 83-54 in East Coast Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers improve to 1-2 and 1-1 in ECC play, while Mercy falls to 0-5 and 0-2 in conference action.
C.W. Post shot 30-for-76 from the floor and 15-for-21 at the line, and scored 25 points off turnovers, while overwhelming Mercy in the paint, 36-12.
The hosts wasted little time in jumping out to an early lead, going on an 11-0 run to begin the game behind treys from
Gil Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) and
Stephen Mears (Middle Island, N.Y.) a jumper from
Nemanja Jokic (Bronx, N.Y.) and two free throws from
Roberto Macklin (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). However, Mercy cut the lead to five points, going on a 9-3 run capped by a jumper from Tyler Jones at 13:30.
However, C.W. Post's stifling defense would not allow another Mercy score again for the next six minutes, as the Pioneers went on a 12-0 run and pushed their lead to 17 points. The lead would hover in the high teens for almost the rest of the half, but Mercy hit two three-pointers and a jumper in the last 1:40, and C.W. Post went into the half with a 12-point lead.
Mercy opened the half with a trey by Jones to cut the lead to single digits, but that would be the last time for the Mavericks as C.W. Post led by double figures the entire second half,leading by 22 points at the 5:13 mark and ending with the 29-point victory over the Mavericks.
Mears scored a game-high 21 points on 7-14 shooting including five treys, and Jokic added his second double-double of the season with 20 points and a game and career high 16 boards. Macklin added 16 points and four steals, and Montalvo filled out the stat sheet with a 13-point, 8-rebound and seven-assists showing.
Mercy's Jones scored 18 points and Byran Van Cott chipped in with 15.
C.W. Post returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 9, as they take on Dowling College at 7 p.m. The game will be part of the C.W. Post Athletic Winter Reunion doubleheader.
