Hall's 20 Pushes Men's Basketball Over Dowling, 75-48
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2009) – Balanced scoring and aggressive play were two key factors for the C.W. Post men's basketball team as they jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half, and never gave Dowling a chance in the second half, coasting to a 75-48 win on Wednesday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center in East Coast Conference action.
The win is the second straight conference victory for the Pioneer cagers, as they improve to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Dowling slips to 3-6 and 1-2 in the ECC.
The game started out tightly contested, as Dowling scored first on a jumper from David Seagers, but C.W. Post quickly answered with a trey from
Stephen Mears (Middle Island, N.Y.) at 17:42. Another three-pointer by
Nemanja Jokic (Bronx, N.Y.) gave the hosts a 6-2 edge, and they quickly pushed out to a six point lead.
Dowling continued to battle, three times cutting the lead to four points, and at 9:30, pulling to within a basket, 16-14, on John Merchant's jumper.
But over the next 8:52 of play, C.W. Post went on an 21-4 run, behind eight points from Jokic and six from freshman
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.), and the hosts took a 37-18 lead into the half.
The Pioneers came out the halftime break the same way they went into it, with Mears knocking down a trey at 18:54 at the feeding teammate Hall on a slam at 18:38, as the C.W. Post lead bulged to 24 points. The Golden Lions were unable to put together a serious threat to the Pioneer lead, and a strong second half from
Aaron Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.) with 12 points and
Gil Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) with nine points allowed the Pioneers to roll to the victory.
On the night, C.W. Post was paced by Hall's game-high 20 point effort. Mears knocked down three treys to finish with 13 points, and Jokic and Montalvo each chipped in with 12, as Montalvo dished out a game-high six assists.
Dowling was paced by Merchant and Josh Lowe, each with 12 points.
C.W. Post shot 44.8% from the field (30-67) and hit 8-of-23 from downtown. The Pioneers outscored Dowling in the paint by a 36-14 count.
C.W. Post will travel to NYIT on Saturday, December 12 at 4 p.m.
