Baseball Earns First Place Nods In ECC Preseason Poll; Kay Named Preseason Pitcher of the Year
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Feb. 17, 2009)- The East Coast Conference released its preseason men's baseball poll today, placing the defending ECC Champion C.W. Post Pioneers in the top slot. Senior Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) received honors as Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
The Pioneers are looking for another repeat of their success last season, as they finished with a record of 29-27 overall, 16-11 in the ECC. C.W. Post posted a four-game win streak to clinch the ECC Championship title and made an appearance in the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional, falling short to Bryant University, 10-3.
Kay finished out the 2008 season with a personal record of 7-2, making 11 starts for the Pioneers. An All-Conference and All-Northeast Region selection, he struck out 82 batters and posted a 2.14 ERA with four saves in his 84 innings of play.
C.W. Post received four first place votes in the polls followed by Dowling College, who earned one vote. St. Thomas Aquinas and Adelphi also received first place nominations, ranking in the third and fourth place slots, respectively.
The Pioneers hope to remain a top pick in the ECC throughout the season under head coach Pete Timmes. They start off their season February 26 as they travel to Wilmington, Del. to take on Wilmington College at 3 p.m.
