LEESBURG, Fla. (March 8, 2009) – The Pioneer pitching staff gave up only one earned run all day as senior
Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) andjunior
Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) each threw complete games, but the Pioneer offense was unable to find any consistency as the baseball team dropped a doubleheader to regional foe Stonehill College, 2-0 and 3-1.
The Pioneers are still searching for their first win as they slip to 0-7 on the season, while the Skyhawks improve to 2-2 overall.
Stonehill jumped on top in the second courtesy of a Kyle Shepard RBI single to right. Another RBI single by Scott Hackett in the fourth would prove to be all the run support Skyhawk starter Matt Giusti would need as he blanked the Pioneers on five hits, walking three and striking out four in seven innings of work.
Kay took the loss despite a strong outing that saw him give up seven hits and only one earned run in six innings, striking out four and issuing only one walk.
Bruce Testa (Glen Cove, N.Y.) had two hits for the Pioneers in the loss.
The nightcap saw the Pioneers jump out to a 1-0 run in the second as
Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) singled down the right field line.
Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.) sacrificed him over to second, and with two outs,
Mike Alfano (sss) singled him home for a 1-0 lead.
The Skyhawks tied the game in the second as Mitch Davis singled to right and stole second and third, then scored when Alfano's throw on Angelo Bruno's ground ball went just wide of first base.
An error by first baseman
Stephen Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) allowed Ryan Healey's ground ball to score Nathan Weber in the seventh, and an RBI sacrifice fly by Shepard gave the Skyhawks another insurance run.
The Pioneers battled back in the bottom of the seventh, as Alfano and Orefice worked walks, and an infield ground ball was misplayed to load the bases, but Shane Penzone induced a game-ending fly out from
Edward Bartley (Bethpage, N.Y.) to preserve the win for Stonehill.
Alfano went 2-for-2 in the loss, which spoiled an excellent outing from starter
Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.), who went seven innings giving up only three hits, three runs (all unearned) while striking out 10 and walking only one.
The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. as they take on Stonehill again in another regional matchup in Davenport, Fla.
