BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 18, 2009) – The baseball team got complete game efforts from both
Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) and
Brian Saldana (Deer Park, N.Y.), and coupled with timely hitting, the Pioneers swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader from Mercy College on Saturday afternoon.
C.W. Post improves to 12-23 overall including a 9-5 ledger in conference play, while Mercy slips to 8-16 and 2-11 in ECC action.
C.W. Post got on the board in the fourth inning of the first game as they took a two-run lead behind an
Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) single to left center that plated junior shortstop
Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) and junior centerfielder
Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.) who had both singled.
Mercy cut the lead to 2-1 with an unearned run in the seventh, but C.W. Post put an insurance run on the board in the seventh when senior left fielder
Bruce Testa (Glen Cove, N.Y.) doubled to center, moved to third on a balk, and scored on a passed ball.
Montesano collected two more RBI in the eighth when he roped a double to deep left field to plate two more runs for a 6-1 advantage.
The run support was more than enough for Budkevics, who scattered four hits in the nine-inning effort, allowing one run (unearned), walking two and striking out five. Montesano went 2-for-4 with four RBI, and Callaghan and freshman right fielder Eddie Bartley (Bethpage, N.Y.) also added two hits.
Game two was a scoreless affair for the first five innings as both pitchers kept the opposing team's offenses at bay. But the Pioneers found a way to scratch out a run in the sixth as Bonin drew a one-out walk and stole second. With two outs, senior first baseman
Brian Anderson (Nesconset, N.Y.) lined a single to left center and a sliding Bonin beat the throw to the plate for the winning run.
The Pioneer pitching was stellar again, as Saldana allowed only two hits and walked one, striking out three.
Bonin and Anderson notched the only two hits of the game for the Pioneers.
C.W. Post looks to continue its winning ways as it hosts Dowling in 3:30 game on Monday, April 20.
