Volleyball Opens 2009 At IUP Invitational; Pioneers Split 1-1 With Lake Erie, Indiana (Pa.)
INDIANA, Pa. (August 28, 2009) – The C.W. Post volleyball team opened the 2009 season with a 1-1 split, first losing a close 3-0 match against Lake Erie College before rebounding with a 3-1 win over host Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the first day of the Crimson Hawk/Hampton Invitational Friday.
Senior Kerri Heitner (Wantagh, N.Y.) and freshman Kirsten Taylor (South Pasadena, Calif.) each tallied 21 kills on the day for C.W. Post.
Junior setter Amanda Ostapow (East Setauket, N.Y) led the Pioneers with 29 assists against the Storm and topped her performance with 43 assists against Indiana.
Lake Erie took won the first match, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-19). Sophomore right side hitter Michelle Naub (North Royalton, Ohio) led the Storm with six kills while teammate Lauren Bogatay (Mentor, Ohio) registered nine digs.
The Pioneers recorded 35 kills (35 of 84) to the Storms' 28 (28 of 65) in the match. Both teams registered 75 defensive digs in the match.
Against Indiana, Taylor led the C.W. Post attack with 15 kills while Heitner added 12. Junior Marilena Guadagnini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) added 10 kills for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers held a 55-50 advantage in kills and completed the match with a .221 hitting percentage (55 of 154).
Sophomore Alyssa Prince (Davison, Mich.) and Danielle Ostendorf (Rockford, Ill.) each tallied 11 kills for the Red Crimson.
C.W. Post returns to action Saturday afternoon, beginning with a 12 o'clock match against West Virginia Wesleyan Collegefollowed by a 7 p.m. faceoff against Saint Augustine's College.
