Men's Cross Country Finishes First At C.W. Post Invitational

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2009)
- The C.W. Post Pioneers and the Molloy College Lions earned top honors, as the Pioneers hosted the C.W. Post Invitational Saturday afternoon. C.W. Post finished first overall on the men's side, while Molloy College captured the top spot overall for the women. Eight teams competed in the race overall all for the men, while six teams competed on the women's side.

 

The Pioneer men were led by graduate student Vince Giambanco (Muttontown, N.Y.). Giambanco was the first runner to cross the line out of a field of 61 runners, finishing the 8k course with a time of 28:37.59. Molloy Lions graduate student Matt Walsh (Wantagh, N.Y.) followed shortly after Giambanco, with a time of 28:52.79, capturing second place. C.W. Post freshman Christian Altamura (Seaford, N.Y.) rounded out the top three, completing the course with an overall time of 28:58.77. The Pioneers captured first place, while the Lions took home a second place overall finish for the men.

 

C.W. Post senior captain Kristen Sweeney (Kennebunk, Maine) was the first harrier to cross the line out of 59 competitors for the women, completing the 5k race in 20 minutes and 57 seconds. St. Thomas Aquinas sophomore Sarah Callagy (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) came in shortly behind Sweeney, taking second place with a time of 21:36.84. Sophomore Indira Availa (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) was the first runner to cross the line for Queens College at the 21:46.34 mark, taking third place. Molloy Lions sophomore Alexandra Barrett (Levittown, N.Y.) took seventh place with a time of 22:29.51, helping the Lions to an overall first place win. St. Joseph's College took home second place overall on the women's side. 

C.W. Post is back in action September 19, as they compete at the NYIT Running of the Bears held in Bethpage, N.Y.
