Southern Connecticut Rebounds To Turn Back Volleyball, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 5, 2009) – Three players registered double-doubles as Southern Connecticut State University rebounded after to losing the first set to defeat C.W. Post, 3-1, in a non-conference women's volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Pelz Gym. The match scores were 28-26, 12-25, 23-25 and 13-25.
Southern Connecticut's record remains unblemished at 6-0 overall while C.W. Post slips to 3-2 overall.
The Owls held a 52-38 advantage in kills with a .235 hitting percentage over the Pioneers. Senior Jenna Tammel (Spring Valley, Minn.) led the Owls with 14 kills and 11 digs.
C.W. Post won the first set after a stretched out battle with the Owls that resulted with assisted blocks from freshman outside hitter Kirsten Taylor (South Pasadena, Calif.) and junior outside hitter Marilena Guadagnini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) on an attack from sophomore outside hitter Megan Lyons (Cold Spring, N.Y.) for the set's final point.
Tammel recorded six kills in the second set as the Owls held the Pioneers to 12 points and tallied five unanswered marks to close out the set.
Southern Connecticut maintained its momentum throughout the third set as junior setter Broghan Miller (West Hartford, Conn.) registered two kills, five assists and four digs in the set.
During the fourth set, the Owls jumped out to a 16-4 lead and held the Pioneers for the final set win of the match.
Miller recorded 11 kills and 20 digs while freshman setter Kimberly Lachowitz (Mansfield, Texas) added 23 assists and 12 digs for Southern Connecticut.
Senior outside hitter Kerri Heitner (Wantagh, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with 10 kills and junior setter Amanda Ostapow (East Setauket, N.Y.) tallied 22 assists. Guadagnini added eight kills, 12 digs and a block assist.
C.W. Post returns to action at the Lock Haven Tournament when it tips off against Molloy College and Lock Haven on Sept. 11.
