Niciforo's Second Half Tally Makes the Difference Against Dowling, 1-0
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 10, 2010) - The C.W. Post women's soccer team won a gritty game at home by a 1-0 final, gutting out a victory over visiting Dowling College on Sunday afternoon in East Coast Conference action.
C.W. Post improves to 7-1-3 overall, including a 3-0-1 slate in conference play. Dowling goes to 6-4-1, 2-2-0 in the ECC.
C.W. Post applied pressure early in the match with deep runs and good through balls that generated some scoring chances, but the Dowling defense stood firm and the Pioneers weren't able to get many clean shots off.
At the other end of the field, the Pioneer defense was equally stifling as Dowling gernerated only one shot in the first half of play, however, it prompted the defensive gem of the game from junior goalkeeper
Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.) Megan Emanuelo beat the Pioneer defense just beyond midfield and broke away towards the C.W. Post goal. As defender
Qaroline Nahl (Kumla, Sweden) raced back towards a streaking Emanuelo, Weiser came out of the goal and cut down the angle, and made an excellent sliding block of Emanuelo's shot, as Nahl quickly recovered the ball and kicked it away.
The Pioneers had a good scoring opportunity with 20 minutes remaining in the half as a Dowling foul gave the Pioneers a free kick. Senior midfielder
Prudence Rydstrom (Islip, N.Y.) struck the ball well and senior forward
Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden) got off a shot, but it was right at Dowling net minder Alicia Commisso.
Coming out of halftime with zeros on the board for both teams, Dowling seemed to have the Pioneer defense a little off balance, but the hosts received some breathing room in the 56th minute as Babic gained control of the ball at midfield. Niciforo made a run up the left side of the field, and Babic threaded a thru pass to the freshman, who beat two defenders and sent a shot into the lower right corner to give the Pioneers the lead.
After the goal, the CWP defense clamped down and Dowling had trouble getting off any threatening shots. Niciforo almost doubled the lead as she ripped a shot in the 60th minute, but the ball went wide left of the net. The Pioneers played solidly the rest of the way as they allowed only six shots by Dowling and Weiser needed to make just three saves between the pipes.
C.W. Post outshot the Golden Lions by a 13-6 count and the teams each took two corners. Commisso made three saves for Dowling.
Head coach
Mark Dawson and the Pioneers look to continue strong conference play as they take on St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, Oct. 16 in a noon matchup.
