Men's Basketball Rolls Past Dowling, 81-56

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (February 13, 2010) –
The C.W. Post men's basketball team used a huge first half to propel past Dowling College in a Saturday afternoon East Coast Conference men's basketball tilt, prevailing 81-56 over the Golden Lions at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers improve to 17-5 overall and 13-3 in conference play, while Dowling slips to 7-17 overall, 5-11 in ECC action.
Although the game started out slowly, with neither team making it onto the scoreboard until 16:31 with a trey from Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.). The Pioneers immediately looked to take control of the game, building a 10-2 lead after a layup by Aaron Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.) at the 13:26 mark.
C.W. Post continued to push their lead as the margin grew to 16-6 at 11:23 after a traditional three-point play by Hall, and the margin bulged to 15 points after a layup by freshman guard Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.). The Pioneers closed out the final five minutes of the half having scored in seven straight possessions and going on a 15-2 romp to take a dominating 28-point, 47-19 lead into the halftime break.
The Golden Lions never seriously threatened in the second half as the Pioneers stretched their lead into the 30-point range, averaging a 25+ point lead for the entire second half, leading by as many as 33 points before cruising to the 81-56 final.
The Pioneers were paced by Kohler, who had a monster first half, scoring all 20 of his points during the first on 8-12 sshooting from the floor along with three treys. Also in double figures was Hall with 19 points on 7-8 shooting and seven rebounds. Junior forward Gil Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) passed out six assits, tying for the game-high with senior forward Nemanja Jokic (Sombor, Serbia), who dished six assists and grabbed a team-high eight boards.
C.W. Post held a 44-29 advantage on the glass, as it shot at a 48% clip (30-62) for the contest and made six three pointers. Dowling shot 31% (20-63) from the floor. The hosts took advantage of 20 Dowling miscues to score 19 points off turnovers and had a season-best 24-14 assist-turnover ratio.
The Pioneers remain in action over the weekend as they host Mercy College tomorrow at 1 p.m. in a make-up of Wednesday's snowed-out contest.
