Baseball Loses 10-3, Posts 1-1 Tie at Palm Beach Challenge
LANTANA, Fla. (March 10, 2010) - The C.W. Post baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision and posted a 1-1 tie with the Southern Connecticut State Owls in its final day of competition at the Palm Beach Challenge in Lanatana, Florida.
The Pioneers now stand at 2-5-1 overall.
C.W. Post got off to a good start in game one as freshman Zack Graczyk (Carmel, N.Y.) led off with a single and eventually scored on senior Brian Anderson's (Nesconset, N.Y.) RBI single to left center.
But Southern Connecticut answered right back in the bottom of the first as Kyle Rosadino singled up the middle and scored on Ryan Geffert's booming triple to right field. After a walk to A.J. Roleau, Nick DeProspo dropped a single to center field that scored two more runs.
The Owls scored another run in the third on an RBI single by Eric Schlitter.
The Pioneers scored a run in the top of the seventh as freshman #Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) scored on senior Bryan Bonin's (Commack, N.Y.) single up the middle.
Two more Southern Connecticut wins in the bottom of the seventh made the score 8-2, and despite another run by the Pioneers in the eighth, the Owls closed out the win with another two runs in the eighth to roll to the victory.
Freshman Zach Badanes (Syosset, N.Y.) took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in one inning pitched. Junior Marshall Kapson (Commack, N.Y.) threw well in relief, scattering six hits over 5.1 innings and allowing three runs.
Anderson led the offensive effort with a 3-for-4 showing including an RBI. Chenicek and Kyle Dean (Southbury, Conn.) each had two hits apiece.
In the second game, senior starter Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) had an outstanding outing, throwing 7.1 innings and giving up just three hits and one earned run while striking out a career-high 11 batters. Graczyk threw 2.2 scoreless innings of one hit-relief.
All the run production in the game came in the seventh as Geffert worked a walk. After an acrobatic catch of Rouleau's popup by Kay, Geffert stole second. Tyler Albrecht stroked a single to left to bring in the run.
But C.W. Post rallied to tie the game as Dean led off sing a single and came around to score on senior Mike Callaghan's (East Meadow, N.Y.) single through the left side.
However, neither team was able to score and the game was called a tie following the tenth inning.
Callaghan's two-hit day led the Pioneers offensively.
C.W. Post will look to return to the win column as they host back-to-back doubleheaders against Southern New Hampshire University this Saturday and Sunday.
