WEST HAVEN, Conn. (March 31, 2010) – Sophomore attacker Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) had four goals and senior Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) and junior Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) each had three goals, as the third-ranked C.W. Post women's lacrosse team shot past No. 10 New Haven, 19-7 on Wednesday afternoon.
C.W. Post improves to 7-0 on the season, while New Haven drops its fourth straight and slips to 2-4.
Senior midfielder Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y.) put New Haven on the board at 28:11 of f a pass from sophomore attacker Sarah Magnone (Yeardley, Pa.).
But C.W. Post scored five straight, starting with an unassisted tally from Jackolski at 27:56. Jackolski then assisted on an Abigail Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) goal at 27:30 to give C.W. Post the lead.
Nicole Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) followed with a free-position goal to put C.W. Post on top 3-1 at 25:20. Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) took a pass from Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and found the back of the net for a 4-1 lead, and Jackolski and Ross connected for a 5-1 advantage at 18:41.
UNH's Natalie Lieberman (Monorville, N.Y.) scored at 17:57 to break up the run for the Pioneers, but another two unassisted tallies, by Fucich at 11:21 and Olen at 10:30, put C.W. Post up 7-2.
UNH scored to as Magnone tallied a free position goal, and LeGoff teamed up with freshman attacker Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y.), but C.W. Post answered with two more goals, from Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) struck again followed by another Olen tally at 5:18. Magnone scored again for New Haven at 5:10, but a Mayott goal rounded out the second half and C.W. Post held a 10-5 lead heading into halftime.
Olen opened up the scoring in the second half with an unassisted score, and although New Haven's Curry tallied a goal at 22:25, the Pioneers took control with an 8-0 lead that put the game totally out of reach, highlighted by two more Fucich goals, another Olen goal, and other Jackolski goal, another Ross score, and solo tallies from Megan Noone (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Caitlin Heraghty (Levittown, N.Y).
In goal for the Pioneers, Sam Powers (Holbrook, N.Y.) earned the win with 25:52 minutes of play. Freshman Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) was solid in goal as well for the Pioneers, making eight saves in 34:08 of play and allowing just two goals.
Charger goalkeeper Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn.) played all 60 minutes in goal and made 19 saves while giving up 11 goals.
The Pioneers outshot New Haven 35-25, and picked up 29 ground balls while winning 16 draw controls. They were successful on 1-of-4 free position shots.
C.W. Post will next host Molloy in the East Coast Conference opener on April 7 at 4 p.m. on Hickox Field.
