BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 10, 2010)
– Senior pitcher Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) increased his Pioneer record  for shutouts as he threw his seventh career shutout, and freshman Zack Graczyk (Carmel, N.Y.) was once again the catalyst for the Pioneer offense, scoring three runs on the afternoon as the C.W. Post baseball team defeated Queens College, 2-0 and 2-1 in East Coast Conference baseball action.
C.W. Post improves to 17-9-1 on the season, and 15-4 in the ECC, while Queens falls to 10-21, 5-14 in conference play.
The Pioneers wasted no time taking the lead in game one, as Graczky led off with a double to left field. Senior shortstop Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) grounded out to second base to advance Graczyk to third. Callaghan roped a line drive single to left field to plate Graczyk for the 1-0 lead.
Graczyk and Bonin were hit by pitches to put runners on first and second in the third inning, and Callaghan again came through with an RBI single to left field as Graczyk scored from second for a 2-0 lead.
Two runs were all the support Kay would need as he tossed the shutout, throwing seven innings and allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out six batters, as he improved to 4-1 on the season.
Callaghan went 2-for-3 with two RBI to pace the Pioneers offensively.
The Pioneers took an early lead in the second game as sophomore third baseman Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) singled to the shortstop, and freshman designated hitter Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) followed with a booming double to center field that scored Compito.
But Queens evened the score in the fifth as Tom Mercatante (Roslyn Harbor, N.Y.) tripled to center field, then scored on a grounder to the shortstop, as Bonin's throw pulled first baseman Steve Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) just off the bag.
Senior pitcher Bryan Saldana (Deer Park, N.Y.) worked out of jams with runners in scoring position in both the fifth and the sixth to keep Queen s to one run, and the Pioneer offense came through with a sixth inning run as Graczyk singled to right to lead off the inning and moved to second on Bonin's sacrifice bunt. A passed ball moved him to third, and with two outs and a full count, freshman catcher Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) lined a single to left center to give C.W. Post a 2-1 lead.
Queens would not give up easily, as pinch hitter Wei Chang (Astoria, N.Y.) reached on an infield error against sophomore hurler Glen Hudson (Sayville, N.Y.), who came on to try to get the save. But Hudson got an out on a sacrifice bunt and struck the next batter out swinging. An infield single with two outs put runners on first and second, however Hudson induced a groundout to third base by pinch hitter Jesse Friedman (Forest Hills, N.Y.)  to end the game and seal the victory for the Pioneers.
Saldana had a final line of six innings pitched, scattering six hits and giving up one unearned run. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk. Hudson earned the save giving up one hit and striking out one.
Queens starter Brian Friedman (Brooklyn, N.Y.)  allowed only five hits and two runs, striking out six in the loss.
At the plate, Chenicek was 1-for-2 with an RBI double.
The Pioneers finish out their five-game series against Queens tomorrow, Sunday April 11, at 12 noon.
