BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (April 18, 2010) – The C.W. Post baseball team split a non-conference twinbill with Concordia College on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 4-2, but dropping the nightcap 1-0.
The Pioneers move to 21-10-1, and Concordia moves to 22-15.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the second as leadoff hitter
Zack Graczyk (Carmel, N.Y.) singled up the middle, stole second, and scored on freshman catcher
Anthony Corona's (Carmel, N.Y.) double to center field.
A Greg Conway home run in the second inning knotted the score at 1-1.
But C.W. Post scored two runs in the fourth, starting with a
Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) double to left field. Following a walk to third baseman
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.), a sacrifice fly moved Compito to third. Left fielder
Kyle Dean (Southbury, N.Y.) dropped down a bunt single that scored Compito. A fielding error by the Concordia shortstop on a Graczyk-hit ball enabled Chenicek to score and the Pioneers held a 3-1 lead.
Concordia pulled to within a run in the fifth, as an RBI single through the right side plated a run.
The Pioneers were able to tack on an insurance run in the sixth as freshman second baseman #Casey McKay# (North Massapequa, N.Y.) drove in a run with an RBI single to center field.
Senior pitcher
Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) threw the complete game, going four innings and giving up two runs (one earned), striking out nine.
Graczyk and McKay each had two hits in the effort.
The Pioneer bats went cold in game two, as they managed only two hits against Concordia hurler Keith Malanga. Despite a stellar outing from starter
Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.), who allowed four hits and only one earned run, a solo shot to David Perelleshi in the second inning, which was the different maker in the game. Kay struck out seven batters and issued two walks in the contest.
McKay and Dean had the only two hits for the Pioneers in the game.
The Pioneers take on Bloomfield in a 3:30 p.m. start tomorrow.
