Baseball Falls In Late Innings to Mercy, 4-3

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 20, 2010) – The C.W. Post baseball team held a one-run lead heading into the eighth inning, but could not close out the Mavericks of Mercy College as they defeated the Pioneers, 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
Mercy improves to 13-21, 8-13 in conference play, while the Pioneers stand at 22-11-1, 16-5 ECC.
Both teams put up zeros until the fifth, when the Mavericks pushed across a pair of runs on consecutive RBI singles by Marc Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, N.Y.).
The Pioneers scored in the bottom of the inning as senior left fielder Kyle Dean (Southbury, Conn.) singled with two outs, and stole second. He would score on second baseman Casey McKay's (North Massapequa, N.Y.) single through the left side.
C.W. Post tied the game in the sixth, as senior shortstop Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) led off with a single. After a single and a sacrifice bunt, Bonin scored on a grounder to the right side by freshman first baseman Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.)
The Pioneers pulled ahead 3-2 in the seventh, as Dean was hit by a pitch and went first-to-third on McKay's single through the right side. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Zack Graczyk (Carmel, N.Y.).
But Mercy struck for two runs in the top of the eighth as Ferrante singled to start the inning. Pinch hitter Michael Grassano (Valley Stream, N.Y.) hit a booming double to right to drive in Ferrante with the tying run. Pinch runner Eric Fazio (Levittown, N.Y.) moved to third on an infield single, and scored on a two-out single to right field by Julio Torres (Harlingen, Tx.)
Starter Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) started and went seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits, striking out seven. Reliever Glen Hudson (Sayville, N.Y.) took the loss, throwing 2.0 innings giving up two runs on four hits, striking out three.
McKay and Bonin each had two hits in the effort, with Bonin doubling and scoring a run.
The Pioneers take on Mercy on Friday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m.
