Olen and Passafiume's Career Days Lead No. 3 Women's Lacrosse Over Mercy, 23-4

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 21, 2010) – Sophomore attacker Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) scored a career-best six goals, and senior attacker Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) registered a career-high eight assists as the third-ranked C.W. Post women's lacrosse team coasted past the Mavericks of Mercy College in East Coast Conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve to 12-1, 5-0 in conference, while Mercy slips to 6-5, 2-3 ECC.
Passafiume connected with Olen for the first two goals of the game, at 29:31 and 28:36. Senior midfielder Kim Williams (Long Valley, N.J.) scored unassisted at 28:09, followed by another Passafiume helper, this time to senior midfielder Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) at the 27:49 mark.
Passafiume scored a goal of her own at 27:11 with Abigail Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) earning the assist. Down 5-0, the visitors finally got on the board with an unassisted Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) goal at 26:00.
Sophomore midfielder Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) scored on another Passafiume assist at 24:45, but Mercy answered right back with a Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y.) free position goal that made the score 6-2.
However, from that point on, the Pioneers went on a tear, as Williams and Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) scored back to back free position goals, followed by another Passafiume to Jackolski goal at 19:05. Olen scored on a free position four minutes later and the Pioneers led 10-2 at the midway point of the half.
C.W. Post kept its foot on the accelerator, as Ashley Janelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) score on a Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) feed, followed by a another Olen goal, two unassisted tallieds from Fucich and Spagnoletta. Mayott scored again at 5:44 to put C.W. Post up 15-2, and Olen, Spagnoletta and Fucich each scored again to round out the half.
Up 18-2 coming out of the halftime break, the Pioneers played an excellent possession game in the second half, as Jackolski would notch two more goals, and Spagnoletta, Olen and Ross each added one score. The Mavericks were able to score twice more on two Darnulc goals, but stifling defense from the Pioneers shut down any further Maverick offense.
The Pioneers outshot Mercy 35-8, and held a 21-8 edge in draw controls. C.W. Post was successful on 6-7 clears, and converted 5-7 free position shots.
Spagnoletta and Jackolski each scored four goals apiece, while Fucich added two goals and one assist, and Mayott added two scores.
Freshman goalie Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) improve to 6-0 as she earned the win, and junior Sam Powers (Holbrook, N.Y.) made one stop in the cage.
Lauren Mateja ( King of Prussia, Pa.) made nine saves in the loss for Mercy.
The Pioneers are at home next on Saturday, April 24 as they honor their six seniors, taking on Stonehill College at 12 noon.
