BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 24, 2010) - A strong starting pitching effort was the key to success for the Pioneers as starters
Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y) and
Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) combined to allow only two runs and eight hits, striking out 18 collective batters, as the C.W. Post baseball team took two games from Mercy College, 4-2 and 5-0, on Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference baseball action.
The sweep improves the Pioneers to 25-11-1, 1Kay9-5 ECC, while Mercy slips to 13-24, 8-16 in conference action.
In the first game, C.W. Post took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, as freshman second baseman
Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.) singled to right field, driving in a run, and a subsequent error by the Mercy right fielder allowed another run to score.
But Mercy tied the game in the fourth as Marc Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y.) rapped a two-run single up the middle.
Kay, the game one starter, settled in and shut down the Mavericks the rest of the way, allowing the Pioneers to take the lead in the top of the seventh, starting with a leadoff double to left center by
Zack Graczyk (Carmel, N.Y.) and a walk to
Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.).
Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.) followed with a double down the left field line that scored Graczyk as the game-winner, and the Pioneers tacked on an insurance run as
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) singled through the right side to score Bonin.
Kay tossed six innings on the mound as he earned the win and improved to 5-1, striking out nine batters and scattering six hits, allowing two runs and two walks. Offensively, Bonin, Callaghan,
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) and
Kyle Dean (Southbury, Conn.) had two hits apiece for the Pioneers.
Budkevics earned the save, closing out the contest with a hitless innings, striking out two.
The second game was a slow affair for both team's offenses early in the game, as the pitchers held both teams lineups in check until the top of the sixth, when the Pioneers were able to scratch out a run, starting as
Edward Bartley (Bethpage, N.Y.) walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on a bunt single by Bonin, then to third on a sacrifice bunt by Callaghan, scoring on a Corona sacrifice fly to right field.
Budkevics would not need much more run support, as he shut out the Mavericks on two hits, striking out seven batters as he improved to 6- 0 on the season.
However, the Pioneers put up four runs in the top of the seventh, and C.W. Post went on to win by a final score of 5-0.
Corona, Chenicek and McKay each drove in runs for the Pioneers.
C.W. Post is in action again with the final game of the five-game series against Mercy, hosting the Mavericks tomorrow at noon.
