Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 24, 2010) – Sophomore attacker Ashely Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) scored a new career-high seven goals, and senior attacker Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) tallied five assists, as No. 3 C.W. Post women's lacrosse defeated No. 7 Stonehill, 23-11, on Saturday afternoon on Hickox Field.
Prior to the game, the team recognized its seven seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program over the past four seasons. Those seniors included Passafiume, Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.), Kim Williams (Long Valley, N.J.), Kaurey Foley (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), Caitlin Heraghty (Levittown, N.Y.), Kian Lyons (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Marlese Gerlach (Kings Park, N.Y.).
Williams set the tone for the game right out of the gate, as Stonehill won the opening draw control, but Williams caused a turnover in the Pioneer defensive end, picked up the ground ball, raced all the way to the other end of the field, and fired a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead just 44 seconds into the game.
Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) scored on a Passafiume feed less than a minute later, and Williams struck again at 26:53, followed by an Abigail Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) score at 25:40, and less than five minutes into the contest, C.W. Post held a 4-0 lead.
But Stonehill found their offense and Sam Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y.) got the Skyhawks on the board with an unassisted score at 23:55. Junior attacker Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal and made the score 5-1, but Lynott struck again at 21:07 and pulled to within 5-2. Jackolski and Passafiume connected for a score at 20:34, but back-to-back Skyhawk goals cut the Pioneer lead to just two, 6-4, at 19:57.
But C.W. Post regained its momentum and strung together six consecutive goals, starting with a Jackolski score, as she added two and Olen added two, and The Pioneers held a 12-4 lead with 6:38 to play in the first half. Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass.) scored a Stonehill goal but sophomore midfielder Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) scored with two seconds remaining in the half to send the Pioneers into the break with a 13-6 lead.
Stonehill came out of the half with a quick goal from Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H.), and Olen found the back of the net again for a 14-6 Pioneer advantage, but back-to-back Stonehill goals gave the Skyhawks some life and they cut the lead to 14-8. However, the Pioneers responded as Olen and Passafiume pumped in goals, and after another Green goal, the Pioneers strung together four straight including two from Olen to take a commanding 20-9 lead.
With the eleven-goal lead and the clock in running time, Stonehill could manage just two more goals on the afternoon, from Hannah Anderson (Eden Prarie, Minn.) and Jackie Landino (North Dartmouth, Mass.), as the Pioneers got scores from Spagnoletta, Heraghty and Olen to close out the contest and roll to the 23-11 final.
C.W. Post got multi-goal efforts from Olen with seven, Spagnoletta with three, Jackolski with three, and Passafiume, Fucich, Williams and Mayott with two apiece.
The Pioneers held a 38-34 edge in shots, and picked up 14 ground balls and won 16 draw controls. In goal, freshman Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) earned the win, improving to 6-1 on the season with eight saves in the cage. Stonehill netminder Rebeccca Moore made six stops for the Skyhawks.
The Pioneers return to ECC action as they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas tomorrow for a 1 p.m. matchup.
