Baseball Slugs Past Mercy, 13-4

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 27, 2010) – The C.W. Post baseball team pounded out 20 hits en route to a 13-4 trouncing of the Mercy Mavericks on Tuesday afternoon in East Coast Conference baseball action.
The Pioneers improve to26-11-1, 20-5 in the ECC, while Mercy slides to 13-25, 8-17 in conference play.
Freshman center fielder Zack Graczyk (Carmel, N.Y.) tripled and scored on a balk to get the Pioneers started 1-0 in the first inning.
Three runs in the third came on an RBI single to right field by Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.), a bases-loaded walk to Brian Anderson (Nesconset, N.Y.), and an RBI single through the left side by Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.)
Another two runs in the fourth came by virtue of a Graczyk RBI single, a Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.) base-knock that drove in another run.
Three C.W. Post runs in the sixth as Callaghan and Corona again drove in runs, and third baseman Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) hit an infield single that plated another run and made the score 9-0.
Mercy finally solved freshman starter Zack Badanes (Syosset, N.Y.) and touched him for three runs in the eighth, with Matt Walsh singling in a run, an error allowing another, and a bases-loaded walk to Justin Muscarella pushing across the third.
The Pioneers scored another run in the eighth, and Mercy scored another in the ninth as the final score was 13-4.
Badanes threw 7.2 innings and scattered seven hit, giving up three runs (one earned), striking out four and walking two. Freshman Ryan O'Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) threw 1.1 inning and allowed one run on one hit, striking out two.
Offensively, several Pioneers had impressive games, headed up by Graczyk and Callaghan, who each went 4-for-6 and drove in two runs apiece, with Graczky also crossing the plate four times. Corona went 3-for-5 and drove in four, and freshman Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.) batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Pioneers begin their final regular-season series of the year tomorrow as they take on Molloy at home starting at 3 p.m.
