BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – (April 9, 2010) – A complete team effort led the C.W. Post baseball team to victory on Friday afternoon, as freshman pitcher
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) turned in a solid start, freshman
Zack Graczyk (Carmel, N.Y) went 2-for-5 with three RBI, and
Kyle Dean (Southbury, N.Y.) batted 3-for-3 with three runs scored, pushing the Pioneers to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Knights of Queens College.
C.W. Post improves to 15-9, 13-4 in the ECC, while Queens slides to 10-19, 5-12 in conference play.
Queens scored first in the contest, as the Knights knocked out four hits in the third frame to drive in two runs, but the Pioneers scored a run in the third, as Dean led off the inning with a single through the right side. He advanced to second on a passed ball, and moved to third on a groundout, scoring to make the game 2-1 on freshman Graczky's single up the middle.
The Pioneers took the lead in the fifth, as senior first baseman
Steve Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) lined a single to left center, followed by a single to right by Dean. Freshman second baseman
Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.) sacrificed both runners over, setting the table for Graczyk, who stroked a double to left center that gave the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.
Senior shortstop
Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) followed with a line drive to left field that allowed Graczyk to race home for a 4-2 C.W. Post advantage.
Another three runs came in the fourth gave C.W. Post a 7-2 edge, as McKay came through with a two-out, bases-loaded single to right center that scored two runs. An error by the Queens center fielder enabled another Pioneer run to score.
Chenicek earned the win, improving to 3-2 on the season, as he gave up two runs on five hits in six innings pitched. The freshman struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Junior pitcher
Marshall Kapson (Commack, N.Y.) was solid in relief, earning the save and tossing three innings of no-hit shutout ball.
The Pioneers are in action again tomorrow, along with all three other C.W. Post spring teams at home, as they host Queens in an ECC doubleheader starting at 12 noon.
