GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (May 1, 2010) –
Senior midfielder Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) scored four goals and junior attacker Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) tallied five assists while adding three goals to lead the second-ranked C.W. Post women's lacrosse team to an upset over the top-ranked Adelphi Panthers, 21-16, on Saturday afternoon in women's lacrosse action on Competition Field.

The win improves C.W. Post to 15-1 overall as it hands the Panthers their first loss of the season, and AU now stands at 14-1.  The win also halts a 32-game winning streak for Adelphi, as the last team to defeat the Panthers was also C.W. Post in 2008.

The Pioneers came out raring to go as they scored the first five goals of the game and held a 5-0 advantage at 22:05, by virtue of scores from sophomore Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.), sophomore Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.), senior Kim Williams (Long Valley, N.J.), Jackolski off a Williams feed, and senior Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.).

But the Panthers regained some momentum and went on a five goal romp of their own, as Kaitlyn Carter (Mineola, N.Y.) scored the icebreaker, followed by four more consecutive Panther goals including two from Claire Peterson (Wantagh, N.Y.).

Adelphi took the lead at 13:46, as Demmianne Cook (Nesconset, N.Y.) scored on a Kristina Wargo (Hicksville, N.Y.) feed.  But Jackolski scored the equalizer at 11:18.

The remainder of the half was a back-and-forth affair as Adelphi took the lead, then C.W. Post tied up the game, followed by a Pioneer advantage with the Panthers tying the game right back up, and at halftime, the teams were even, 8-8.

The teams played a scoreless first five and a half minutes of the second half, before Erica Devito (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Cook connected for a goal and gave AU the 9-8 lead.

Jackolski found the back of the net on a free position shot at 23:12 to tie the game, however, Adelphi scored back to back to take an 11-9 lead.

But C.W. Post found some fire, and Jackolski fed Fucich for a goal at 21:17, followed by a Jackolski and Passafiume scores, both on Fucich assists, at 20:21 and 18:47, and the Pioneers pulled ahead 12-11.

Elizabeth Fey ((Kings Park, N.Y.) scored at 18:32 and tied the game at 12 all, but Spagnoletta ripped in a goal at 16:47, and Olen scored back to back at 16:08 and 14:49 to give C.W. Post a 15-12 lead.  The Pioneers would not trail again in the contest, but Adelphi certainly made things close.

Fey and sophomore attacker Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) exchanged goals, and back-to-back Adelphi goals from Marissa Mills (Islip, N.Y.) and Alison Incarnato (Centereach, N.Y.) pulled the score to 16-15.

But C.W. Post scored three straight, getting tallies from Fucich, Mayott and sophomore Ashley Janelli (Glen Head, N.Y.), and the Pioneers led 19-15.

Adelphi's Fey tallied an unassisted goal at 3:39, but the Pioneers put the game away with goals by Mayott at 2:34 and Passafiume with 25 seconds remaining, and handed the Panthers the loss.

Freshman goalie Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) was outstanding in goal as she made 11 saves for the Pioneers, improving to 8-1 on the year.

Adelphi netminder Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Port Washington, N.Y.) made ten stops in goal.

Adding to the multi-goal effort for C.W. Post was Olen, Nann and Passafiume with three each, and Williams and Spagnoletta with two apiece.

Fey led Adelphi with five goals, and Devito had one goal and two assists.

The Pioneers outshot AU 39-33, and won 21 draw controls compared to 18 for Adelphi.  C.W. Post also connected on 5-of-7 free position shots.

The Pioneers round out their regular season with an away contest at Dowling on Wednesday, May 5 at 7 p.m.
