HAVEN, Conn. (May 14, 2010) –
A stellar complete game effort from senior hurler Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) propelled the C.W. Post baseball team to its first NCAA Regional victory in over 25 years, and also gave the Pioneers the school record 32nd win, making the 2010 Pioneers the winningest team in program history, as C.W. Post defeated Dominican 4-1 on Friday afternoon at Yale Field.
The Pioneers improve to 32-16-1, and Dominican ends its season at 28-18 after being eliminated from the tournament.
Dominican touched Kay for a run in the first, as Sean Burke (Bronx, N.Y.) singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout to second, and scored on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Marco Moreno (Miami, Fla.).
However, Kay settled down and the Pioneers broke through in the fourth, starting with shortstop Bryan Bonin's (Commack, N.Y.) single to center field. Senior right fielder Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.) followed with a double down the left field line. After a flyout, senior first baseman Brian Anderson (Nesconset, N.Y.) and sophomore designated hitter Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) were hit back back-to-back pitches, forcing in the tying run. A strikeout set the stage for Kyle Dean (Southbury, Conn.) who came through with a bases-loaded, two-out single that drove in two runs and gave C.W. Post the 3-1 lead.
Coming out in the fourth with the lead, Kay shut down the Chargers and grew stronger as the game went on, bolstered greatly by excellent defense by the Pioneers, as Kay helped his own cause with a pickoff of a runner at second base, freshman catcher Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) gunned out a runner attempting to steal second, and Callaghan threw a bullet from right field to nab a runner attempting to advance on a sacrifice fly.
The Pioneers tacked on a run in the seventh, as Callaghan singled to center and went to third on Corona's double to right center. Compito singled through the left side to drive in the run, and the Pioneers led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Kay allowed a runner to reach second in the seventh, but got two flyouts to end the inning. He set the Chargers down in order in the eighth, and issued a one-out walk in the ninth, but immediately got back-to-back groundouts to end the inning and the game.
Kay's final line was nine innings pitched, allowing only four hits and one run, striking out four and walking four. Dave Bartuska (Duryea, Pa.) was the losing pitcher for Dominican as he went eight innings and gave up four runs on ten hits, striking out ten and issuing one walk.
Leading the 10-hit effort for C.W. Post was Callaghan, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and Corona, who was 2-for-5. Dean and Compito each had two RBI for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers await the results of tonight's game to find out their opponents in tomorrow's contest, which will start at 3 p.m. on Yale Field.
