No. 3 Adelphi Ends No. 1 Women's Lacrosse's Season, Defeats Pioneers 14-9 in NCAA Semifinals

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (May 22, 2010) - The top-ranked C.W. Post women's lacrosse team pulled to within a goal of third-ranked Adelphi University with a second-half comeback attempt, but a 6-1 run by the Panthers put the game out of reach for the Pioneers as they fell 14-9 in the NCAA Division II semifinal game.
C.W. Post ends its season at 16-2 overall, while Adelphi improves to 18-1 and will play for the NCAA Division II Championship tomorrow at 3 p.m. against West Chester University, a 9-8 winner over Lock Haven in the other semifinal game.
Adelphi took a 1-0 lead on a Marissa Mills (XX) goal at 23:48, but C.W. Post answered a minute and a half later with a free position goal from
Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.).
But Adelphi went on a 4-0 run that spanned almost the rest of the first half, behind tallies from Erica DeVito (Shoreham, N.Y.), Mills, Demmianne Cook (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Fey (Kings Park, N.Y.), taking a 5-1 lead with 4:43 remaining.
Jackolski scored an unassisted goal with 44 seconds remaining in the half, and cut the lead to 5-2 heading into halftime.
Adelphi scored firs coming out of the halftime break, as Cook notched an unassisted score at 28:19.
But C.W. Post scored back-to-back, as Jackolski scored both goals at 27:48 and 26:55 cutting the AU lead to two, but AU scored again as Mills found the back of the net and took a 7-4 lead.
However, C.W. Post kept fighting and Jackolski scored another goal at 25:45, and
Kim Williams (Long Valley, N.J.) scored on a free position shot at 24:51, cutting the Adelphi lead to just one, 7-6.
But Adelphi scored three straight, two from Cook, before C.W. Post finally regained their footing on offense with an unassisted score from
Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) at 18:53. But another three goals by Adelphi put the score at 13-7.
The Pioneers still did not give up, as
Abigail Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) and
Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) each scored on feeds from
Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) pulling the score to 13-9.
However, another AU goal put the score at 14-9, and the Pioneers ran out of time in the second half as Adelphi held on for the victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) made seven stops in goal, while counterpart Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Port Washington, N.Y.) made six stops between the pipes.
Jackolski scored five goals in her final game in green and gold. For the Panthers, Cook poured in five goals and Mills scored three, Devito two, and Fey assisted on four scores.
