Nicole Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came into the game leading the ECC in field goal percentage at 51.7 percent, and continued her accurate shooting with a five for seven shooting performance, ending the game with 10 points, along with eight rebounds.
Entering the week fourth in the league in scoring at 17.3 points per game,
Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) continued her scoring lead for the Pioneers with a team-high 15 points against Bridgeport. Aiken will look to guide the Pioneers back on the winning track at home, where the Pioneers are currently 2-1 in conference play and 2-2 overall. C.W. Post will look to take advantage of the opportunity to rebound against Mercy, with the Pioneers coming into the week with a +2.6 rebounding margin on opponents and Mercy stands at a rebounding margin against opponents of -6.0.
Despite turning the ball over 29 times, the Mercy Mavericks women's basketball team was able to defeat NYIT, 74-69, on Saturday for a conference win, the first on the year for the Mavericks. Junior Jasmine Williams came off the bench for Mercy to lead the team with 20 points and eight rebounds, shooting seven for ten from the field.
During the season, it has been the combination of junior guard Simone Williams and senior guard Ashley Borofsky that have led the Mavericks. They rank seventh and eighth in the conference in scoring, with Williams managing 13.2 and Borofsky at a 12.9 clip. Williams also leads the league in steals at 2.75 a game, as well as the being the team leader in assists at 3.8. Borofsky meanwhile comes into the game leading the Mavericks with 6.1 rebounds a game. Williams' steal average also helps the Mavericks reach the top spot for team steals per game (10.42).
The two teams met earlier in the season on December 1, with the Pioneers edging out the Mavericks, 61-58. Aiken led all scorers with 26 points, going 12 for 16 from the charity stripe. Senior
Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) did a solid job on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds. Jasmine Williams led the Mavericks in the effort, with 12 points and eight rebounds.
The second game of the double-header will feature the men teams for each school, who also faced off against each other earlier in the season with the Pioneers developing a balance attack in the game with a 104-80 victory over the Mavericks. Sophomore
Jonathan Kohler led the Pioneer attack with 21 points, with senior point guard
Gilbert Montalvo sparking the team with 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
The Pioneers entered the first match-up at a 2-2 record, and are now currently at 8-6 overall, 5-2 in conference, and riding a four-game win streak after Monday's win against Bridgeport, 82-78. Senior forward
Aaron Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with a 25 point effort, going 11 for 18 from the field.
Despite the win, the team's leading scorer,
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) went down in the early part of the second half with an ankle injury. Bonneau is coming off being named ECC Player of the Week, where he averaged 28.0 points a game in two games, including a career-high 39 points in a win over Queens on Saturday. The junior guard also came into the week leading the conference in scoring by nearly two points a game over the next individual, as he brought his average up to 17.1 points a game. It is uncertain at the time of how serious the injury was and if any time will be missed.
Mercy will come into the game looking for its first win of the season, currently standing at 0-12 overall and 0-7 in conference. Mercy's last action came on Monday as well, suffering a 92-83 loss to Dowling. Manny Garcia led the Mavericks in the game with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Garcia is now averaging 11.5 points a game and 5.5 rebounds a game.
Hasan Powell is the current scoring leader for the Mavericks, averaging 12.1 points a game, good enough for 12th in the conference. Powell also is a good defender, getting into the opponents passing and dribbling lanes with his 2.45 steals per game, fourth in the conference.
C.W. Post continues to be the leading offense in the conference, and Mercy is not too far behind in third place. However, both defenses are the two worst scoring defenses in the conference, so this game should turn out to be a high-scoring affair.
Once again, because of the severe weather that is supposed to hit the Metropolitan area on Wednesday, the games were postponed to Thursday evening. The women are set to tip off at 5 p.m., with the men to follow approximately half hour after the completion of the women's game.
