Five Players Score in Double Figures As Men's Basketball Cruises Past Mercy, 98-64

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2010) - Five players scored in double figures and every player who saw the court contributed on the stat sheet as the C.W. Post men's basketball team coasted to a 98-64 victory over the Mercy College Mavericks on Thursday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers are winners of five straight and improve to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play. Mercy remains winless as the Mavericks slip to 0-13, 0-8 in ECC play.
Mercy remained close throughout the first half as the Pioneers were unable to pull away, with the Mavericks helping themselves by shooting 46% in the first half. C.W. Post led by seven at the break, but the second half proved to be an entirely different story as the Pioneers dominated from wire to wire in the second stanza.
C.W. Post came out and hit a trey to push to a ten point lead, and quickly upped their lead to as many as 18 at the 14 minute mark, leading 58-40 following a jumper by sophomore guard Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.). The hosts increased their lead into the 20-point range, where it would remain for the rest of the contest, topping out at the 44 second mark as the Pioneers coasted to the 34-point win.
Pioneer freshman forward Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) scored a season-high 22 points to lead the effort, also pulling down nine rebounds while hitting 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. Close behind was senior guard Aaron Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.), who scored 19 points and pulled down ten boards for his third double-double of the season. Junior playmaker Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.) also registered a double-double, scoring 13 points and dishing out 11 assists, while Kohler chipped in with 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Gil Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) round out the scoring with 13 points and seven assists.
C.W. Post outrebounded the Mavericks 44-29 and took much better care of the ball (27 assists to 16 turnovers) than their counterparts, who made 20 miscues. The Pioneers took advantage for 25 points off Mercy turnovers, as well as outscoring the visitors in the paint, 50-30.
C.W. Post shot 52% from the floor (37-for-70) and made 8-of-21 shots from downtown, while shooting 84% from the free throw line (16-for-19).
C.W. Post will take on Dowling on Saturday at 3:30 in the last of three ECC matchups this week for the Pioneers.
