Men's Basketball Finishes Off Dowling, 80-70

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2010) – Junior guard
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) scored a game-high 30 points to lead C.W. Post men's basketball to an East Coast Conference victory over Dowling College, 80-70, on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
C.W. Post has won six straight as it improves to 10-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play, while Dowling slips to 3-11, 3-6 in ECC action.
Dowling scored the first basket of the game, but the Pioneers went on a quick 9-0 run to jump out to the early lead. However, Dowling battled back and tied the game at 14-14 with 13:15 to play. Sophomore guard
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) broke the deadlock with a jumper at 11:30, but Dowling battled right back with a trey by Sean Smith that gave DC its first lead at 10:59, 17-16.
But the Pioneers opened up a one point game with under five minutes to play as senior guard
Aaron Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.) nailed a trey and junior guard

Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) drained a three to push the lead to 35-29, but Dowling quickly pulled to 38-34 with under 40 seconds to play. Hall's jumper put the Pioneers up by six, 40-34 with 14 seconds to play, but Smith hit a three at the buzzer to trim the Pioneer lead to 40-37 heading into the half.
Following the halftime break, the teams continued to battle neck and neck, with the Pioneers holding onto a slim four point lead, but at 16:02, Carberry hit a trey that put the Pioneers up 49-44. An
Aaron Hall layup at 15:19 put C.W. Post up 51-44, but Dowling used a jumper and back to back three pointers to tie the game at 51 apiece with 13:30 remaining. Carberry was fouled hard following a strong defensive stop by the Pioneers, but still converted both free throws to put the Pioneers back on top, 53-51 with under 13 minutes to play. Dowling answered right back with an Algiradas Macevicuis jumper and the score was knotted yet again.
A Carberry jumper put the Pioneers ahead again, 55-53, and a Bonneau trey gave CWP a 58-53 lead with just over 11 minutes to play. But Dowling would not fold their tents as Michael Hill knocked down a three of his own and kept the game to just two points.
Holding onto a three-point led, Montalvo canned a three from the top of the circle at 9:40, but Merchant answered right back for DC with a three of his own. However, the three pointer bonanza continued as Bonneau hit a shot of his own from downtown and put the Pioneers on top, 65-59 with 9:01 to play.
Dowling held on, and the Pioneers were up just 67-63 with exactly eight minutes to play. But Corwin Austin converted a three point play to pull within one with 6:56 to play. A Macevicius layup gave DC the lead, 68-67, but Bonneau drained a three to put the Pioneers right back on top at, 70-68.
Another Bonneau jumper at 5:22 put C.W. Post up by four, 72-68, however another Dowling layup cut the lead to a bucket. But both teams hit a scoring drought for the next two minutes, and with 2:43 remaining in the contest, the Pioneers held a 74-70 advantage. Kohler's basket with 1:09 to play put C.W. Post up 76-70. A missed three by Dowling gave the Pioneers possession, and Carberry and Montalvo each hit both of their free throws with under a minute to play to ice the win for the home team.
Also in double figures along with Bonneau was Hall with 16 points, Carberry with 13 points, and Kohler with a double-double, scoring 12 points and hauling down 10 rebounds.
Dowling was paced by a 15-point effort by John Merchant, as well as 13 points apiece by Smith and Hill. Macevicius chipped in with 10 points.
The Pioneers travel to NYIT on Wednesday as they continue ECC play at 7 p.m.
