Men's Basketball Wins Eighth Straight, Tops Molloy, 75-53

BROOKIVLLE, N.Y. (Jan. 22, 2011) – The C.W. Post men's basketball team jumped out to a strong first-half lead, and never looked back as the Pioneers avenged an early season East Coast Conference loss to Molloy, defeating the Lions 75-53 at the Pratt Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
C.W. Post wins its eighth straight game, as it improves to 12-6 overall and 9-2 in conference play. Molloy slides to 5-10 overall and 5-6 in ECC action.
The Pioneers shot 46.3% from the floor, making 25-of-54 attempts. C.W. Post also had a strong showing from long range, making 10-of-24 shots for a 41.7% average. Junior guard Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with 22 points, shooting 8-for-12 including four treys. Joining Bonneau in double figures were two Pioneers with 13 points apiece, as sophomore guard Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) and senior guard #Gil Montalvo# (Astoria, N.Y.) each scored 13, with Montalov adding a game-high seven assists.
The Pioneers started off hot, jumping out to a 10-point lead, 17-7 at 14:50. But Molloy climbed back into the game with a 7-1 run that trimmed the host lead to 18-14 at 11:20. The Pioneers were undaunted as they quickly stretched the lead back to double digits with a 10-0 run that put them on top, 28-14 with 7:02 left in the half. At the halftime break, the Pioneers led by a comfortable 15-point margin.
C.W. Post kept its foot on the gas as it quickly stretched the lead into the 20's, and Molloy would get no closer than a 15-point deficit for the entire second half.
The Pioneers helped themselves by holding a 34-28 edge on the glass, as well as forcing 18 Molloy miscues and scoring 24 subsequent points off turnovers. The Pioneers also outscored the Lions in the paint, 22-14. An 18-10 assist-turnover ratio rounded out the stat sheet for C.W. Post on the afternoon.
C.W. Post continues its swing through the ECC as the Pioneers host St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, January 26 in a 7 p.m. matchup.
