Both Basketball Teams Come Off Victories to Face Bridgeport Monday
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (January 9, 2011) – After experiencing two different types of victories on Saturday afternoon, the C.W. Post men's and women's basketball will be right back in action on Monday January 10 at the Pratt Recreation Center. Both Pioneer teams will welcome in the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport for a double-header matchup in the ECC Conference.
The Pioneers enjoyed an easy victory on Saturday afternoon against Queens, 82-46. C.W. Post used a balanced attack from the start to handle the Knights of Queens, led by junior guard
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and her game-high 17 points. Seniors
Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) and
Anthia Smith (Elmira, N.Y.) each contributed with 13 points, along with four three pointers from junior
Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island).
With the win, the Pioneers improved its overall record to 6-5 and moved into second place in the ECC standings with a 4-2 record. Aiken continues to lead the Pioneers in scoring at a 17.5 average per game. Joyner also is averaging double-figures in the points' column after Saturday's performance, moving up to 10.1 points a game.
In terms of scouting Bridgeport, the Purple Knights are looking to bounce back after a loss to ECC leading St. Thomas Aquinas, 62-48. The 48 points put up by Bridgeport is a season-low for the team, with only senior Kelly Keil entering double-digits in points with 14 for the game. The Purple Knights dropped to 3-3 in the conference standings, now one game behind the Pioneers. Bridgeport's overall record is now 5-8.
Keil continued to be the scoring leader for the Purple Knights after Saturday's game, now averaging 14.7 points a game. The senior forward is also the leading rebounder for the team with her 7.5 boards a game. Entering the week, Keil was fifth in both scoring and rebounding in the conference. Keil was honored during the second week of the season, being named Co-Player of the Week. Teammate and fellow senior Elinor Avny also enjoyed the same honor in the ECC, earning Player of the Week honors two weeks after Keil during week four of the season.
As for the team play of Bridgeport, the Purple Knights entered the week 39th in assists per game in Division II for the NCAA at 16.0 assists per game. The team has now lost five of its last six games, however will be a true test for the Lady Pioneers Monday evening.
The second game will feature the top men's team in the ECC in Bridgeport, with the Pioneers currently in a three-way tie for second place in the conference. Earlier in the season, these two teams finished tied for first in the ECC preseason poll with a total of 58 voting points.
The Pioneers are coming off a thrilling double overtime victory over one of those teams they are tied for second place with, Queens. After leading the Knights of Queens by as many as 14 points during Saturday's contest, the Pioneers needed two extra frames to finally put the Knights away. Led strongly behind
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) and his career-high 39 points during the game, C.W. Post is now riding a three game win streak entering play Monday.
Bonneau has been a force on the offensive side for the Pioneers, and Saturday was clear evidence that he will need to be part of every team's defensive strategy when facing the Pioneers. Bonneau not only can shoot the long-range shot, but he also can get to the hoop as the Pratt Center has seen many dunks and alley-oops finished off by Bonneau during the season. Many of these passes to Bonneau are coming from senior point guard
Gilbert Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.). Montalvo put together a great effort alongside Bonneau on Saturday afternoon, tallying a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists. Montalvo also enjoyed a good day on the defensive side, forcing Queens' turnovers and creating six steals for himself.
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) is coming off being named ECC Player of the Week, however, experience foul trouble during Saturday's game and never was able to get going. However, the sophomore forward is still someone who can go out and get a double-double any game, being one of the better scorers and rebounders in the league. Senior
Aaron Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.) entered the week the second leading scorer on the team, but also is the second leading rebounder on the team. Hall's size and quickness has been a key contribute to getting to the basket and creating fouls on opponents.
Bridgeport enters Monday night first in the ECC at a 5-1 record, with the only loss coming at the hands of NYIT back on December 11. However, the Purple Knights come into the game off a win, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas 66-56 on Saturday. The Purple Knights were led by Tim Cokley's 17 points and nine rebounds, missing a double-double by one rebound. As a team, the Purple Knights went 21 for 23 from the charity stripe on the day.
Jermaine Washington leads a quartet of players who are averaging double figures in points for the Purple Knights. Washington, who was named ECC Player of the Week during week four of the season, is averaging a team leading 13.9 points a game. Washington entered the week ranked sixth in scoring in the conference.
Cokley is also one of the players averaging double-figure points with 10.8 points a game. He is also the team leader in rebounds with 7.8 a game, and was leading the league in the category at the beginning of the week.
The Pratt Recreation Center should be a great site Monday evening for two great games. The women are scheduled to tip off at 5 p.m., with the men to follow at 7 p.m. If you can't make the game, be sure to check out the C.W. Post Athletic website for links that will connect to live stats, radio connect, and also webcast of the games.
