Volleyball Come's Away With Five Set Victory Over Queens, 3-2
FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2011) – The C.W. Post volleyball team started this week's five match schedule with a five set victory over the Queens Knights, 3-2 (25-19, 17-25, 20-25, 25-19, 17-15). The win also snaps a four-game losing streak for the Pioneers.
C.W. Post now improves to 8-11 on the season, with a 2-4 conference mark. Queens drops to a 2-12 overall record and 0-6 within the ECC.
Facing a 12-10 deficit in the middle of the first set, C.W. Post used a 15-7 run to close out the match with the 25-19 victory. The match was concluded by one of
Jordan Schroer's (Kailua, Hawaii) three kills during the set.
Stephanie Schwarz (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) used one of her 11 assists to set up Schroer on that deciding kill. As a team, the Pioneers managed 14 kills while forcing seven Knight errors.
Queens evened the match score with a win during the second set with three individuals tabbing four kills apiece that helped total 19 kills during the set for the Knights. Jovana Pavlovic was one of three individuals to lead the team in kills and accounted for the last two points of the match to help her team earn the win.
Pavlovic improved upon her second game with five kills during the third set to help lead the Knights to another victory to take a 2-1 match lead. The Pioneers could not find an offensive flow during the third frame as the team totaled 12 attacking errors compared to only seven kills during the set.
Facing a must win set to keep the match going,
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) joined Schroer to lead the Pioneers to a win and force a fifth game. During the fourth set, Namahoe hit an impressive .571 percentage behind four kills on seven attempts with no errors. Schroer was also impressive during the set with a .429 hitting percentage on four kills as well in seven attempts with only one error. The two also helped spark a 9-0 run during the set.
The fifth and deciding set turned into a back and forth affair, as the Pioneers utilized a block and kill to end the set and take the set and match win. Despite seeing Pavlovic continue her solid night with six kills in the set, the Pioneers managed to force eight attacking errors on the part of Queens to help secure the win.
Schroer ended the night with 13 kills to lead the team to go along with 12 digs. Namahoe also produced a double-double for the Pioneers with 12 kills and a team leading 20 digs. Schwarz ended her night with 37 assists and 11 digs and
Shayla Hixson (Honolulu, Hawaii) rounded out the group of double-doubles with 11 kills and 17 digs. The team also used seven total blocks to anchor the defense.
Pavlovic earned the match lead with 25 kills despite the loss. She also registered a team lead with 15 digs.
C.W. Post will return home for a conference match this Thursday against Molloy. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start as the Pioneers will look to put together back to back conference wins.
