Season-High in Blocks and Kills Lead Volleyball Over Molloy, 3-2
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 13, 2011) – After taking the first two sets of tonight's match versus Molloy, the C.W. Post volleyball team needed a victory in the fifth set to take the conference win over the Lions, 3-2 (25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 18-25, 15-4). The Pioneers capitalized on 19 total team blocks in the five set match.
After a called timeout on the part of the Pioneers after being down 16-11 to the Lions in the middle of the first set, C.W. Post responded with a 14-6 run to close out the first set. Many Molloy errors helped spark the run as the Lions committed 10 attacking errors to go along with four service errors in the opening set.
C.W. Post then cleaned up its own offensive play during a convincing win in the second set as the squad committed only one attacking error to go along with 14 kills and account for a .433 hitting percentage during the set. The team also took control of the net area from a defensive stand point, as seven total team blocks were tallied.
Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) contributed five block assists while
Laura Garbarino (Nutley, N.J.) came away from the set with four block assists and one solo block.
Molloy kept battling during the third set, however, as the Lions took advantage of a 9-5 run to close out the third set and kept the match alive. As a team, the Lions tallied 13 kills to help the cause which was led by Sam Berna and four kills of her own.
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) kept the Pioneers going in third set despite the loss with seven kills on a .429 hitting percentage.
After falling behind 2-0 early in the set, the Lions found themselves forcing a fifth and deciding set after a win in set three and four. In the fourth set, Berna led the charge for Molloy once again with five kills. The Pioneers also committed nine attacking errors during the set.
With the match coming down to a deciding fifth set, Namahoe used her aggressiveness to lead the Pioneers to the victory as she put down six kills as well one solo block and one block assist. As a team in the fifth set, the Pioneers went nine for 21 on attacking attempts with only one error to put together a .381 hitting percentage.
Namahoe ended her night with a match-high of 19 kills to go along with nine digs, one block solo, and 6 block assists. As a team, the Pioneers notched a season-high in both blocks, with 19 total blocks, and 60 kills. Adams led the way in that category with 1 block solo and 11 blocks assists.
Jordan Schroer had her sixth double-double on the season with 14 kills and a team leading 20 digs, with
Stephanie Schwarz falling three assists shy of her season-high with 43 helpers.
Berna was second in kills for Molloy with 13 as Angelica Nicalek ended the night with the team-high of 16 kills. Nicalek also took home the team-high in digs with 22.
Next on the schedule for the Pioneers will be a tri-match in Springfield, Massachusetts as American International will host both C.W. Post and Saint Michaels for three match day. The first match for the will be at 2 p.m. against Saint Michaels, followed by a match with the host Yellow Jackets at 4 p.m.
