Volleyball Sweeps District of Columbia, 3-0, to Move to a .500 Conference Record
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2011) – The C.W. Post volleyball team concluded its busiest week of the season early today with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) victory over the District of Columbia. The Pioneers end the week with a 4-1 record, including three conference victories.
The Pioneers now move to 11-12 overall for the year and move to the .500 mark inside the conference with a 4-4 record against ECC opponents.
After establishing a late 24-18 lead and only needing one more point for the set victory in the first frame, the Pioneers need to hold off the Firebirds as the District of Columbia team went on a quick 5-0 spurt to bring the game within one at 24-23. However,
Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) put down one of her five kills in the set to clinch the victory. Delfs ended the set with the five kills on a .357 hitting percentage.
Jordan Schroer (Kailua, Hawaii) also contributed five kills on a .333 hitting percentage.
During the second set, C.W. Post capitalized on four total team blocks along with
Makamae Namahoe's five kills to take the second set that included a late run to secure a victory. Namahoe hit a .556 percentage during the set to lead all players, while also not committing an attacking error. Delfs continued her solid play at the defensive side of the net with one solo block and two block assists.
The Pioneers then matched the previous set's total of four team blocks during the third set to earn the sweep victory over the Firebirds. Delfs once again took the lead in that category with one more solo block to go with three block assists. C.W. Post stopped a late rally by the District of Columbia with its own 6-2 run to end the set.
Delfs ended the match with a team-leading 11 kills to go along with her two solo blocks and five block assists. Four players also managed double-figure digs, led by
Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) and her 13 digs.
In the loss, Vanessa Garley hit .321 to go with 11 kills for the Firebirds. Grace Perilli and Kamene Rose shared the team lead in digs with 14 apiece.
Next on the schedule for the Pioneers will be a road conference match this Tuesday against Dowling. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start on the Golden Lions home floor.
