NYIT Defeats Volleyball, 3-2, On Dig Pink Night
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2011) – The New York Institute of Technology earned a hard fought win over C.W. Post in tonight's ECC volleyball match, taking the match by a 3-2 (27-25, 20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 6-15) final score. In addition to tonight's match, both teams wore pink during the game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
The Pioneers now drop to 11-14 on the season, including a 4-6 conference record. On the opposite side, the Bears improve to 16-6 and now hold a 9-2 conference mark.
C.W. Post earned the extra point first set behind two attacking errors on the part of NYIT after the score was notched at 25 a side.
Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) led the Pioneers during the set with five kills on a .400 hitting percentage. And despite the set loss, Shelby Cable put down seven kills to lead all participants during the first set.
Cable and the Bears quickly responded during the second set, using an 8-3 run to earn the victory and push things to 1-1 in the match score. Cable led her team once again in kills, this time with four in the set.
Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) kept the Pioneers close with six kills of her won during the set.
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) helped put C.W. Post up 2-1 in the match after she used five kills to help lead a third set victory. After a 7-0 Pioneer run midway through the set, the Bears came back to tie things up late in the match. However, Adams managed to notch a kill and give the Pioneers the set victory.
NYIT went on to force a fifth set after using an 8-0 run to the team's advantage early in the fourth set. The Pioneers also used a run of their own, 5-0, to try and pull the comeback. A Kelly Brown kill and a service ace by Cable sealed things for the Bears in the end.
Once again, the Bears used a large run to help close things out, with this run coming in the fifth and deciding set. With the score tied up at 5-5, NYIT went on 10-1 run to end the match and set with a 15-6 score and 3-2 match victory.
Cable ended her impressive night with 24 kills for the Bears to go along with eight digs, one service ace, and two total blocks. Tugce Sirdas and Damla Albayrak each earned double-doubles for the Bears, as Sirdas tallied 13 kills and 11 digs while Albayrak led the team with 43 assists and added 20 digs. Lisa Peacock led all individuals with 25 digs.
For the Pioneers, both Namahoe and Delfs contributed 13 kills to the effort. Namahoe also added two service aces and four assisted blocks.
Stephanie Schwarz (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) put together a double-double while leading the Pioneers in both assists, 32, and digs, 20. Schwarz was joined by three other Pioneers who also tallied double-figure dig numbers.
C.W. Post will be back in action this Thursday as the team travels to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to face the Mercy Mavericks in a conference match. Things are set to begin at 7 p.m.
