Volleyball Sweeps Eighth Match of Season in 3-0 Victory Over Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 27, 2011) – Despite not having a single individual player reach double-figure kills numbers, C.W. Post volleyball capatilized on Mercy errors and used a balanced offensive attack to secure a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) victory over the Mavericks.  The Pioneers totaled seven service aces on the night.

C.W. Post now moves to 5-6 in the conference and improves to 12-14 overall for the year.  The Mavericks fall to 2-8 in conference play and see their overall record drop to 8-21.

In the first set, the Pioneers managed short bursts to take increase their lead gradually over the opening frame.  After a Mercy timeout with the score 20-14 in favor of C.W. Post, the Pioneers closed out the set with a final 5-3 run that was capped off by a Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) service ace.  Delfs and Shayla Hixson (Honolulu, Hawaii) each led the squad with three kills apiece in the beginning set.  Hixson also found her mark on two service aces.  Brenna White paced Mercy with six kills. 

Being down 20-21 late in the second set, a called timeout by the Pioneers appeared to have generated a spark in the team as the score turned in favor of C.W. Post with a 25-22 finish to the second set, pushing the match score to 2-0.  The final five points for Coach Shellane Ogoshi's team were generated by two kills and then three errors by the Mavericks.  One of those points was picked up on a block by Delfs and Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio).  White once again tried propelling Mercy to a victory with seven kills during the set.  However, the Mavericks committed seven attacking errors and four service errors to help push a Pioneer victory.

C.W. Post then closed out any chance of a possible fourth or fifth set as the team took the third set to earn the 3-0 match victory.  During the final set, the Pioneers grew a lead as large as nine with a 23-14 lead.  Hixson claimed the final point of the match as she turned one of Stephanie Schwarz's (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) eight assists in the match into a kill.

Hixson and Delfs combined to share the Pioneer lead in kills with seven a piece.  Hixson also anchored two of C.W. Post's seven service aces during the match.  Schwarz finished her night with 23 assists in three sets.  The team also was able to spread out 26 digs, with Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) taking charge with seven. 

White ended the night as the match leader with 17 kills.  And the team was able to put down 31 kills, however were plagued by 24 attacking errors, nine services errors, and seven receiving errors. 

C.W. Post takes part to the court at Georgian Court this Saturday for the team's final tri-match of the year.  Match times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. against Concordia and the host Georgian Court.
