Swimming Defeats Army in Dual-Meet, 135-123; One Team Record and Six Pool Records Established
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 18, 2011) - The women's swimming team of C.W. Post earned a victory over the Black Knights of Army, improving to 2-0 at home this season during dual-meets with a close 135-123 decision. One school record and six pool records were broken while two personal bests were also set.
Sandra Luiga (Jarfalla, Sweden) set a new school record in the 400 individual medley with a first place finishing time of 4:38.14. The previous record was set back on Dec. 1, 2007 when Katie Kelly finished the event in a time of 4:40.49.
The night also saw six pool records set that includes four individual records and two relay marks. Tamara Garriock (Duncan, Canada) set two of the individual records during the 200 free and 200 breaststroke events. In the 200 free, Garriock earned the event victory and record with a time of 1:53.22 to hit the wall first and then came back during the same distance in the breaststroke with a winning time 2:21.62, a time that was nearly seven seconds in front of the second place finisher.
Cornelia Hanes (Stockholm, Sweden) and Mairi Morrison (Carnock, Scotland) also set pool records in the 50 free and 100 free respectively. Hanes set the record with a 24.02 time in the 50 event, with the 100 distance seeing Morrison completing the race in a 52.35 time.
Luiga, Garriock, Hanes, and Morrison then all teamed up to set a 400 medley relay pool record with a time of 3:56.08, a record that has stood for nearly two years by a team that Hanes was a part of. The 200 free relay also saw a new pool record set as Garriock, Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.), Morrison, and Hanes completed the distance in a time of 1:36.05, a record that was last set almost four years ago.
Two personal bests were also set during the meet, both coming during the 100 fly. Catriona Laird (Saline, Scotland) swam a 59.45 while Sandra Kirstein (Hollviken, Sweden) put forth a time of 1:05.45.
The C.W. Post squad will next take part in The College of New Jersey's Winter Invitational during the weekend of Dec. 3 and 4.
