LANTANA, Fla. (March 14, 2011)- The C.W. Post baseball team went toe to toe with the 15th-ranked Southern Connecticut Owls, but came up just short in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at the Santaluces Baseball Complex, losing 3-1 and 4-3 on Monday afternoon.
The Pioneers slid to 1-11 overall while Southern Connecticut improves to 12-0.
Both teams put up zeros through the first five innings of play, but the Pioneers finally broke through in the sixth with some well executed small ball.
Tim Tolan (Malvern, N.Y.) singled to shortstop and moved to second on
Matt Simone's (West Islip, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt. Tolan came around to score on
Casey McKay's (Massapequa, N.Y.) single through the right side.
But the lead was short lived as SCSU's A.J.Roleau ripped a bases-loaded single just inside the first base line and just past diving first baseman #P.J. Jennings# (Morris, N.J.) , driving in two runs and taking over the lead for the Owls.
The two runs spoiled an otherwise strong effort by starter
Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.), who tossed seven innings and scattered seven hits, striking out four and walking two. An insurance run in the eighth on a Pioneer outfield error accounted for the other Owl run and gave Southern Connecticut the 3-1 final.
The Pioneers took the lead first in the second game, as Simone roped a tow out double and scored on McKay's single to center in the bottom of the third.
SCSU got two runs back on a Bryan Dorsey RBI double in the fourth, but C.W. Post rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning as
Steve Smith (West Islip, N.Y.) roped and RBI triple to drive in a run, then scored on Jenning's single to center field.
But Southern Connecticut tied the game with a single up the middle that took a bad hop over Tolan at shortstop, and took the lead in the sixth as T.K. Kiernan singled in the eventual game-winner.
Freshman
Paul Bishoff (Levittown, N.Y.) scattered nine hits through six innings, striking out four and issuing one walk. Sophomore catcher
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 at the plate.
The Pioneers continue play at the Palm Beach Challenge tomorrow as they take on Saint Michael's at 2:30.
