Baseball Drops 6-2 Decision to UMass Lowell

LANTANA, Fla. (March 17, 2010) – UMass Lowell jumped out to an early lead over the C.W. Post baseball team, then made the lead stand as the River Hawks handed the Pioneers a 6-2 defeat on Thursday afternoon in Lantana, Fla.
UML, winners of 12 straight, improves to 12-1 on the season while the Pioneers drop to a tough 1-14.
The River Hawks plated two runs in the first inning on an RBI groundout by James Katsiroubas and an Pioneer infield error that allowed another run to cross. Two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Connor Burnham and another infield error by the Pioneers made the deficit 4-0.
C.W. Post's offense was stifled by Taylor Robinson, who didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning. In the eighth, C.W. Post found some life as
The Pioneers threatened in the eighth as Steve Smith (West Islip, N.Y.) hit a leadoff single and then stole second. #P.J. Jennings# (Morris Plains, N.J.) stroked a one out double to bring Smith home and cut the score to 4-1.
But UMass Lowell squelched any chances of a C.W. Post comeback in the bottom half of the eighth, as Burnham stroked a two-run double to make the lead 6-1.
CWP starter Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) worked 7.2 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out seven while giving up six runs (four earned).
C.W. Post would plate one more run in the top of the ninth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Smith.
The Pioneers take on Adelphi tomorrow at 1 p.m., continuing action at the Palm Beach Challenge.
