BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (March 26, 2010)  –  A error in the ninth inning allowed the tying run to score and the C.W. Post baseball team was unable to keep Dowling from earning the walk-off victory as the Pioneers fell 2-1 to the Golden Lions in the East Coast Conference opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore pitcher Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) threw seven innings and scattered three hits while striking out five. He was matched by Dowling ace Gabriel Duran, who struck out 11 Pioneers and allowed four hits.

The Pioneers got on the board in the top of the eighth, as junior designated hitter Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) singled up the middle and drove home sophomore outfielder Matt Simone (West Islip, N.Y.) who had led off the inning getting hit by a pitch.

Things looked promising entering the ninth inning, and junior hurler James Stone (Massapequa, N.Y.) got two outs with runners on base, and induced a flyout to left field. However, the ball was misplayed and dropped, allowing the tying run to score and runners to advance to first and third. On the next play, Andrew Abreu took off for second and drew a throw down from the catcher, allowing Erik Cabrera to score from third and give Dowling the walk off.

Dowling and C.W. Post continue their five-game series tomorrow as they return to Golden Lions Field for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00.
