BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 10, 2011) -  The Queens College pitching staff combined to hold the Pioneers to just two hits, as the baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Knights on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the five game East Coast Conference series between the two teams.
C.W. Post falls to 6-25 on the season, 5-9 in conference action, while Queens moves to 6-23, 4-11 in ECC play.
Sophomore Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss even though he allowed just one earned run, as he worked six innings and scattered eight hits, striking out seven batters and walking one. He worked out of one out jams with runners on second and third in both the third and fourth innings.
Queens took a 1-0 lead in the second as Warren Kelly singled to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Connor Burke's double to right center.
Queens struck again in the fifth, as a pair of Pioneer errors allowed two runs two cross.
The Pioneers rallied in the ninth, as sophomore catcher Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double to left center. He reached on a hard shot by sophomore second baseman Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.) that took a wicked hop over the Queens second baseman's glove.  Dan Burnett (Farmingdale, N.Y.) worked a one out walk to bring the winning run to the plate, but Steven Varela came in and got a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat and earn the save.
Gabriel Guerrero earned the win for Queens, going seven innings and allowing one hit, striking out two and walking three. Varela earned his third save of the season.
C.W. Post will play non-conference road games this week against Bloomfield on Tuesday and Dominican on Thursday, before hosting Concordia on Saturday.
