No. 5 Stonehill Holds Off No. 6 Women's Lacrosse, 11-9

EASTON, Mass. (April 16, 2011) - No. 5 Stonehill broke a 5-5 halftime tie to open up a six goal-lead over the sixth-ranked women's larosse team, and despite a second half comeback that saw the Pioneers pull to within two goals, the rally fell short and C.W. Post fell 11-9 to the Skyhawks in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
C.W. Post suffers just its second loss of the season as the Pioneers stand at 9-2 overall, while Stonehill improves to 12-1 overall.
C.W. Post took a 2-0 lead as the game started with a
Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) unassisted score at 28:57. There was almost a 10-minute gap until the next goal, as Sileo assisted on a
Brie-Claire Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) score at 19:50.
But the lead was short lived as Stonehill stormed back for three goals by Samy Lynott, Hannah Anderson and Heather Sullivan to post a 3-2 advantage over the Pioneers.
Sileo scored on a
Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) assist, and then Spagnoletta followed with a score of her own at 8:27 to give C.W. Post back the lead, 4-3.
But Stonehill's Kelsey Shannahan and Sarah Galligan scored goals at 7:07 and 1:03 respectively, and the Skyhawks appeared to be headed to halftime with a 5-4 lead before
Morgan Chiarenza (Nesconset, N.Y.) scored with four seconds remaining to knot the game at 5-5 right before halftime.
But whatever momentum the Pioneers gained before the half was immediately squelched by three straight goals to open the half by Stonehill, two by Lynott and the third by Kayla Green.
Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) scored to pull the deficit back to two, but Stonehill scored three straight again as Lynott , Anderson and Shanahan scored within a six minute span, and at 14:28, the Pioneers trailed 11-6.
C.W. Post showed fight however, and Spagnoletta scored at 11:18 followed by a goal by
Abbie Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) at 10:03, and the Pioneers trailed 11-8 with ten minutes remaining. But Stonehill's strong defense allowed just one more score – Sileo tally at 2:48 – as the Pioneers comeback effort fell short.
Sileo led the Pioneers with three goals and two assists, while Spagnoletta scored two goals with an assist. In goal,
Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) made 12 saves.
C.W. Post held a 17-5 edge in draw controls, but Stonehill led in ground balls, 25-14, and outshot the Pioneers 30-23. Turnovers hurt the Pioneers as they committed 22 compared to only 13 for the Skyhawks.
The Pioneers host West Chester on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
