BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 2, 2010) – The University of Bridgeport Purple Knights swept a pair of close contests from the C.W. Post baseball team on Saturday afternoon, winning 2-1 and 2-0 in an East Coast Conference doubleheader.
Bridgeport improves to 9-5 on the season and 4-3 in conference play, while C.W. Post dips to 3-21, 2-5 in conference play.
The first game featured a strong pitching performance from starter Glen Hudson (West Sayville, N.Y.), who stifled the Purple Knights for the first six innings.
The Pioneers were able to scratch out a run in the bottom of the fifth, as sophomore third baseman Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) doubled to lead off the inning, and scored on base hit up the middle by freshman shortstop Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.).
Bridgeport put two men on base against Hudson in the seventh, and senior Marshall Kapson (Commack, N.Y.) came on in relief. But an outfield error with two outs allowed both runners to score and give UB the victory.
Hudson went 6.1 innings and was the hard luck loser as he allowed only two hits and no earned runs, striking out five. Chenicek was 2-for-3 in the game.
The second game was a similar contest as starter Paul Bischoff (Levittown, N.Y.) held the Purple Knights to only four hits through six innings. However, a hit batter and an RBI single to left field by Peter Barrows plated UB's first run, and a wild pitch and throwing error by the catcher gave the Purple Knights an insurance run in the fifth inning.
The runs were more than enough for UB's Shaun Hancock, who limited the Pioneers to only four hits in the contest.
C.W. Post and Bridgeport wrap up their five-game series tomorrow at Harbor Yard with a noon doubleheader.
